RAM & ILS: systems that work when they should, at the lowest cost

In recent years, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) and Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) have become cornerstones of performance and sustainability in any industrial system. They originated in defence, but today they are essential in rail, aerospace, naval, energy and manufacturing.

At Geminys we apply these methodologies because they make something crucial possible: systems that work when they should, at the lowest possible cost throughout their life cycle.

What is RAM analysis?

  • Reliability: the probability that equipment performs its function without failure for a defined period.
  • Availability: how much of the time the asset is ready and operational when needed.
  • Maintainability: the ease, speed and resources needed to return it to service after an intervention.

The three are linked: availability results from the balance between design reliability, ease of maintenance and supportability.

Why RAM starts at design

  • Define user needs and operating conditions properly.
  • Design with reliability and maintenance in mind: materials, accessibility, redundancy, simplicity.
  • Validate the design before manufacturing.
  • Monitor in-service behaviour and adjust as needed.

Improving reliability or maintainability once equipment has been built is usually expensive, complicated and sometimes impossible.

The operational context

Good RAM analysis requires knowing the real operating conditions: climate, hours of use, loads, environment and the capabilities of the maintenance team.

ILS: the bridge between design and operation

ILS plans the resources needed throughout the service life: spare parts, documentation, training, tools and support. Without a RAM-ILS study, life-cycle cost (LCC) becomes unpredictable.
